Montreal Canadiens vs. Detroit Red Wings - 10/21/14

USA TODAY Sports

The Red Wings have been a playoff team for more than two centuries and are without question one of the most celebrated franchises in NHL history so it comes as a bit of a surprise to call this team surprising through the first couple weeks of the season. Detroit is loaded with talent but are definitely a team in transition and heading into this season many thought this would be the year they would fall off and undergo some changes especially with Pavel Datsyuk being sidelined. However, through the first five games the Wings sit at 3-1-1 which isn't blowing any doors down but they have looked downright impressive in doing so and all hats go off to Jimmy Howard who is quietly having a monster start to the season with a GAA sitting at a miniscule 1.76. The Wings will look to make it three wins in a row on Tuesday after back to back wins over the Toronto Maple Leafs but they are up against a Montreal side who has been skating through their opponents with ease and have the Stanley Cup on their mind once again this season.

The Canadiens are off to an impressive 5-1 start and have won both games at the Bell Centre this season putting them atop the Atlantic division and it should come as a surprise to nobody if the Habs can stay around that spot for the entire regular season. Montreal is a very solid team and they proved that against the Bruins last week and against Colorado over the weekend and if Montreal can get continued production out of their secondary scoring or they add a piece during the season they could very well be a Cup threat come playoff time. However, with all that considered I think this is actually a pretty good spot for the Red Wings as they're coming off two huge wins against Toronto and are riding a very hot Jimmy Howard at the moment and while Montreal is tough to beat at home they aren't going to win every single game and with a nice price on a good Red Wings team I think this is the time to take it.
