Joe Louis Arena and the Detroit Red Wings play host to the Pittsburgh Penguins in Thursday action.
The Detroit Red Wings fought the good fight but eventually came up short in a 2-1, overtime loss at Montreal on Tuesday. The Red Wings apppeared to be in control of this one when Henrik Zetterberg gave the visitors a 1-0 lead with a second period tally off of an assist from Pavel Datsyuk. Datsyuk had missed the first five games of the season with a shoulder injury but seemed to be 100% after he scored in the third for a 2-0 lead that was waved off for goalie interference. That kept the Canadiens alive and they took advantage with an Alex Galchenyuk tally tying the game with just 3:09 left in regulation with David Desharnais notching the winner just 56 seconds in to the extra session to make Carey Price and his 27 stops hold up. Jimmy Howard took the loss with 34 saves.
USA TODAY Sports
The Pittsburgh Penguins have often struggled with Philadelphia and a 5-3 defeat to the hated Flyers at the Consol Energy Center on Wednesday night did not change that trend. The Penguins defense struggled with a three goal third period burst by Philly sealing the deal. Mark Streit and Pierre-Edouard Bellemare scored in the first with Matt Read, RJ Umberger and Seann Couturier lighting the lamp in the third to make a winner of Ray Emery who made 22 stops. The Penguins received goals from Marcel Goc, Paul Martin and Nick Spaling who scored and assisted. Marc-Andre Fleury was charged with the loss with four goals allowed on 28 shots. Strangely Philadelphia has been more at home at the Consol Energy Center then the Penguins witha 10-1-1 record there in the past 12 trips.
The under is 5-0 in Penguins last 5 games playing on 0 days rest with the over going 8-1-2 in Penguins last 11 Thursday games and 6-1 in Penguins last 7 vs. Atlantic. The Detroit Red Wings are 0-5 in their last 5 vs. a team with a winning % above .600 with the under going 9-1-3 in Red Wings last 13 overall and 7-1-3 in Red Wings last 11 vs. Eastern Conference. Head to head the under is 6-2 in the last 8 meetings in Detroit and 8-3 in the last eleven meetings with the home team going 11-4 in the last 15 meetings. Both teams have done well in the early going but the Red Wings might have an edge with Pittsburgh playing on back to back night. I'll look for an advantage as I wait for netminders to be confirmed so check back Thursday...
