Calgary Flames vs. Washington Capitals - 10/25/14

USA TODAY Sports

The Capitals look to regain some momentum after dropping their last contest in Edmonton on Thursday night when they skate into Calgary to take on a Flames team that has surprised many through the first stretch of games of the regular season. Washington is hoping for a turnaround season after things didn't go so well a year ago and they of course will be relying on Alex Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom to get them back to the promised land though I think they are a couple pieces away from being competitive. Washington has but one regulation loss to their name and that was to the Oilers but otherwise they have recorded a point in all contests this season putting them in the mix in the Metro division but if they're going to stay there and compete with the likes of Pittsburgh and the New York's they'll need to get consistent play every night of the week. Braden Holtby will get the call as he will square off against Karri Ramo.

The Calgary Flames were expected to be basement dwellers in the Western Conference this season and while a lot can still change the players and fans alike are enjoying the nice start they are off to. The Flames are 5-3-1 through their first nine games of the season and if you asked anyone in the organization if they'd be three games above .500 with six wins in their first 10 games they would be shocked. Calgary has a nice base for the future but some of their young stars in Johnny Gaudreau and Sean Monahan have been the catalyst of the team's strong start and it is safe to say the youth movement has officially begun for the Flames. While I do think Calgary will regress a bit they are in a nice position here as they're on home ice in one of the toughest venues in the NHL and while Washington is the deeper team with the better goaltender I think Calgary is full of confidence at the moment and should be taken here at a nice price.
