The Philadelphia Flyers are a very tough team to figure out as they have some of the game's top talent on their roster and a pretty solid coaching staff and yet they have missed the playoffs the last two seasons and don't look any better to start this season. The Flyers are a game under .500 and are 11 points back of the Pens and Islanders for top spot in the division and with Claude Giroux's health still in question it is tough to fathom the Flyers closing the door enough to take the divisional crown though a wild card spot is still a strong possibility. The Flyers have struggled on the road through their first 9 contests sporting a 2-6-1 mark and have just four wins in tehir last 10 games overall which could lead to some changes during the season if the results don't improve as Ron Hextall won't be shy to pull the trigger and blow things up. Steve Mason is expected to start for the Flyers as he will go up against Jimmy Howard for the Wings.
The Red Wings meanwhile are off to a very nice start as they sit in third place in the Atlantic division and are 11-5-5 in their first 21 contests and a large part of that success has stemmed from the play of Jimmy Howard between the pipes. The Wings are in a pretty unique spot as they are in a bit of a rebuild and transition phase as a number of younger players are making their way into the every day lineup yet they are finding the win column so you can't really consider it a full rebuild as they look like a playoff team once again. The Wings are always a tough out on home ice and they are 7-2-2 at home this season and against a Flyers team tonight who is dreadful on the road it looks like another great chance for the Wings to add to their numbers. I like Detroit at home and taking them in regulation gives us a nice price.
