The NHL is pumping the brakes a little bit today, as there’s just one game set for this holiday. Not to worry, though: we’ll be back tomorrow with 11 games on the schedule and 12 on Saturday. In the meantime, let’s check out some of the notable players out there making headlines.

John Taveres, C, NY Islanders: The Isled kept their stellar season run going last night with an overtime victory over the Capitals. Tavares posted the game-winner in the extra period, giving New York a 3-2 result. Anders Lee got the scoring going in the first, while on the other side Alex Ovechkin posted a pair of goals on his own.
The Islanders are now 16-6-0, have won five straight and 10 of their last 11.

Pavel Datsyuk, C, Detroit Red Wings: After missing four straight games due to a groin injury, Datsyuk came back to the lineup with a vengeance last night against the Flyers. He put up two goals in the 5-2 victory, while Stephen Weiss (goal; assist) and Darren Helm (two assists) also notched a pair of points each.
Datsyuk now has seven goals and six assists in 11 appearances so far this season. Detroit is now 12-5-5 and has won four of the last five games.

Blake Comeau, LW, Pittsburgh Penguins: Comeau boasted a hat trick last night against the Maple Leafs, and it was enough to get his team to a 4-3 victory in last night’s other overtime affair. He posted the game-winner in the extra period to complete the trio of scores.
Evgeni Malkin managed a goal and two assists in the win, while on the other side Leo Komarov put up a pair of scores himself.

Martin Jones, G, Los Angeles Kings: Road wins are hard for the Kings to come by these days, but they got one last night against the Wild at Xcel Energy Center.
Jones posted a shutout, with 28 saves in a 4-0 victory. He now has five shutouts in his career. It was just the second road win for the defending champs this year, out of 10 tries.
Scoring for the Kings were Mike Richards, Dustin Brown, Tyler Toffoli and Justin Williams.
