The Stars took one on the chin last night as they looked as though they were destined for two points but a stingy effort from the Wild came back to be the difference and Dallas had to settle for one in what was a highly entertaining contest. Dallas has been underachieving a bit so far this season as many expected them to be right in the mix in the Western Conference after landing Ales Hemsky and Jason Spezza but so far the moves haven't panned out according to plan and superstar Jamie Benn has beenn a little slow on the score sheet. However, the Stars can pull to within a single point of the Wild and Jets in the Central division with a win here and Dallas gets to fire on Calvin Pickard instead of Semyon Varlamov, something that must be sitting nicely with Benn and Tyler Seguin who look to get back to last year's rhythm where they were lighting up every opponent any day of the week.
The Avalanche have fallen off tremendously so far this season though it isn't hard to see why as their performance last year far exceeded their talent level despite having some great players and their statistics in terms of winning trends was unheard of. The Avs are still expecting a trip back to the playoffs and they certainly can turn things around but the average at best play of Varlamov this season has greatly changed the team's style and outlook and against a Stars team who thrives on scoring goals it might prove to be a difficult night for them despite being favoured. As mentioned, Pickard is getting the nod here and while he has been decent in his minimal starts so far I think Dallas gets the better of him here and taking ther Stars as a nice road dog is where I'd lean if anywhere.
