The Montreal Canadiens will look to get back in the win column after back to back losses to the lowly Buffalo Sabres who stole a home and home series from the former Atlantic division leaders and now they head to the road to face an Avalanche side that is underachieving so far and is trying desperately to get back in the fold. Montreal is coming off a playoff run where they made it all the way to the Eastern Conference finals and have that has a benchmark at the very least for this season with the Stanley Cup as the ultimate goal and while they haven't played the part in their last two games they certainly have the roster to do so. The Habs are still 6-3-1 in their last 10 contests and are 16-7-2 on the season but five of their nine losses this year have been on the road where they find themselves here and playing against an Avs team that is very talented but not quite up to speed so far this season could be a dangerous trap spot for them. Carey Price is expected to get the nod as he will go up against Calvin Pickard for the Avs.
The Avalanche will look for a huge confidence boosting victory that could ultimately affect the outcome of their season as taking down the Canadiens could go a long way in helping this team get back on track in the Western Conference. The Avs are coming off one of their most successful seasons in team history and set a record for the biggest single season turnaround after finishing with one of the worst records in hockey the year before but right now they are feeling the effects of just how unbelievable their season was last year as some of the little things are adding up in the other direction. Colorado will be without Semyon Varlamov for the next week or so as he nurses an injury leaving the goaltending duties with Calvin Pickard and the youngster will look to give the Avs back to back victories in what would be a huge spot for them. I am a sucker for getting plus money on the better team in these instances but sometimes you have to dig a little deeper and to me this is a spot the Avs absolutely need to win and I think the outcome of this contest will determine largely how they will play the rest of the year. I like the Avs at home here as a slight favourite.
