The San Jose Sharks got off to a slow start on Thursday night at home against the Boston Bruins, but they made it up to the home crowd with an explosive final 40 minutes. Trailing 2-0 at the first intermission San Jose came out flying to start the second. Tommy Wingels scored 27 seconds into the period and unfortunately for the Bruins the snowball just kept rolling down hill. San Jose got goals from Tyler Kennedy and then a power play goal from Wingels before allowing the Bruins to rally and tie and then take the lead. But with the heavy possession and shot advatange, 24-7 in total during the period, the Sharks were able to even things up on Joe Pavelski’s power play tally before the end of the period. Six goals in total were scored in the period between the two clubs but it was clear that the ice was tilted in San Jose’s advantage. It would have been disheartening for the Sharks to have dominated like that only to trail heading into the third, so Pavelski’s goal was a huge boost for them. In the third period it was Kennedy adding his second goal of the night just over three minutes in to give the Sharks the lead. Pavelski and Tomas Hertl added goals as the Sharks went on to the 7-4 win. It was the third win in a row for the Sharsk and now they’ll be looking to get a little revenge on the rejuvenated Calgary Flames. It has been a bit of a rocky start to the year for the Sharks but this is a club that will be defined by how it performs in the post season. If the Sharks have to trade off a mediocre regular season for some success in April and May they will gladly do so. The schedule is never easy in the Western Conference but if the Sharks can find a way to get a win against Calgary on Saturday night they have a home and home with the Edmonton Oilers coming up afterwards. A lengthy winning streak would go a long way toward inching them up the congested Pacific Division standings. The top five teams in the division are separated by just seven points.

It seems a bit redundant at this point but the Calgary Flames continue to exceed expectations this season. It’s hard to imagine this continuing all year long but sometimes there are clubs that just find a certain kind of chemistry and are able to ride it out into a magical year. This Flames team has the type of players on it that just might be able to do that. There’s some very young and talented kids that haven’t been corrupted by a history of losing, and sometimes that in and of itself goes a long way toward changing an organization. Thursday night it was another comeback victory for the Flames that gave them their 17th win in their first 27 games to start the year. Trailing 3-2 to the Colorado Avalanche with just over a minute to play, the Flames got a goal from Dennis Wideman to even the score. It was Wideman’s 10th goal of the season. That’s 10 goals in the first 27 games for a defenseman that has never scored more than 13 in a season in his career. These are the types of things that sometimes need to happen for a club like this to overachieve the way they have, but right now no one who is a fan of the Flames is going to question it. Just 1:47 into the overtime period it was youngster Seasn Monahan with his 10th goal of the year to give the Flames the 4-3 win. The come from behind win was the fourth consecutive win for the Flames and fifth in the last six games. Calgary defeated the Sharks 2-0 the night before Thanksgiving, getting a shutout from the red hot Karri Ramo and a pair of goals from the even hotter Jiri Hudler. It’s hard to say how long this is going to last but right now the Flames are a fun team to watch.

Calgary Flames vs. San Jose Sharks - 12/6/14 NHL Pick, Odds, and Prediction

These two teams played a low scoring contest the last time they met, but both these teams have been lighting the lamp pretty consistently lately. With the total set at five the over is a good play in this one.
