The Edmonton Oilers have been a train wreck since the puck dropped in October and another season is down the tubes as they look to the draft once again in an attempt to restore some credibility to the former City of Champions. The Oil have gone through a number of coaching changes and have tried different line combinations but nothing has seemed to work for this group since they last made the playoffs back in 2006 and as this season goes along and the losses continue to pile up I think they will finally pull the plug on some of their young guns and move them for value in return as it is clear this recipe isn't working. The Oilers will look to get back in the win column in what should be a very hostile environment and the team they're playing is just as desperate for a win as the wheels have fallen off in Calgary after a red hot start.
The Flames look to get back into the fold in the Pacific division after a dreadful pre-Christmas stretch that saw them drop 8 of 10 contests and spiraled them all the way down to fifth in the division but luckily for them they are still in striking distance thanks to their hot start. The Flames were expected to be in the draft lottery this season especially after learning they'd be without fourth overall pick Sam Bennett for the season but they have silenced their critics from day one and have more than a fighting chance to lock up a playoff spot in the West. Calgary does have a lot of young, talented players so don't be too surprised to see them move some pieces at the trade deadline if they are in the hunt but unlike baseball teams are very unlikely to move top end pieces for a playoff push especially the ones that are on the Flames as it is their youngsters who are leading the way. This is a tough spot as clearly the Flames have been playing the better hockey this season but both teams have been equally as bad of late and these teams hate each other and a rivalry game is always tough to predict. What I do know is that they love lighting the lamp against each other and as such I am going with the over.
