The NHL stormed back onto the scene yesterday after a three-day Christmas break, but the league is pulling its collective foot off the gas pedal today, as there are just two matchups to look forward to. Not to worry, however, as tomorrow marks another packed schedule. In the meantime, let’s check out some of the notable names out there in our daily wrap-up.

Henrik Zetterberg, LW, Detroit Red Wings: The Red Wings have had a rough go of things lately, but last night’s game worked out for the best. Zetterberg put up a goal and an assist in the 3-2 overtime victory (Gustav Nyquist got the game-winner), while net-minder Jimmy Howard posted 31 saves on 33 shots.
That’s just the second win in the last eight games for Detroit (2-2-4), who improved to 19-8-9 on the year.

NHL News: Player News and Updates for 12/28/14

Derek Stepan, C, New York Rangers: The Rangers’ Stepan provided all of the team’s offense last night against the Devils, logging his third career hat trick in a 3-1 victory. Henrik Lundqvist held down the defensive end on 19 saves for the Rangers’ eighth win in a row. They’ve won 10 of their past 12 and have at least one point in 15 of 19.
As for Stepan, he’s got six goals in 21 games. During that span, the Rangers are 13-6-2.
Meanwhile, the Devils fall to 12-18-7.

Jason Demers, D, Dallas Stars: Dallas got their fourth straight road win last night, this one coming against the Blues in a tough 4-3 victory. The team got goals from Demers, Travis Moen, Ryan Garbutt and Trevor Daley while goaltender Kari Lenthonen made 30 saves. The team is now 1-7-3 in the Central and 15-14-5 overall.
On the losing side, the Blues are now 0-3-1 in their past four and 21-11-3 overall.

Anze Kopitar, C, Los Angeles Kings: Kopitar is one of the lynchpins in the Kings attack, so it makes sense that he was instrumental in their 3-1 win last night against the Sharks. He posted a goal and an assist in that one, bringing the Kings to 18-11-7 on the year and breaking a six-game points streak from San Jose (5-0-1).
The Sharks are now 19-12-5 on the year and were limited to just 13 shots through two periods last night.
