Colorado Avalanche vs. Edmonton Oilers - 1/2/15 NHL Pick, Odds, and Prediction

USA TODAY Sports

The Edmonton Oilers tumultuous season continues into 2015 on Friday night as they play their first game of the new year against the Colorado Avalanche and they'll be hoping some of their resolutions will stick. The Oil have been a write off since the end of October and have already begun the unloading process as they fired former coach Dallas Eakins and will likely clean house as the season moves along in terms of on ice personnel and players who have been underachieving. Edmonton did play pretty well in their last contest but the end result stayed the same as they ended up losing in overtime and now with the mid way point of the season fast approaching they sit with a measly 24 points and just eight victories. The Oilers will look to get back in the win column for the first time in double digit games once again but against an Avs team that had a disappointing first half it might prove to be another tough result.

The Avalanche have been among the league’s most disappointing teams as many people had high expectations for them this season but with the moves they made in the offseason to replace Paul Stastny it is clear they haven't quite found a solid remedy yet. Colorado brought in veteran forwards Daniel Briere and Jarome Iginla and while the latter has played decently well he isn't the same impact guy he was and I think was just a move for his leadership and a symbol of friendship between Iginla and Avs GM Joe Sakic. Colorado does have a chance to go on a run though and perhaps take down a wild card spot but heading into Friday night they sit 11 points back of the Blues for third place in the Central and are nine back of the Flames for the second wild card spot so they have their work cut out for them. If the Avs are going to make a push it has to start tonight as a loss to the Oilers would result in discussions of tanking to land a top draft pick and they may already be too far behind to make a push but I think they will at least venture an attempt and that starts with a strong effort here against Edmonton.
