The Islanders continued their magical season last night against their division rivals from new Jersey and after looking down and out most of the game the Isles forced overtime and stole the second point away and as such have jumped into first place in the Metropolitan division. New York added some great pieces in the offseason to go with an existing core that is as promising as any in the NHL and their recipe has worked wonders so far and for a team that made the playoffs last season you can bet their expectations to get back there are a baseline and that making a charge at the Cup is more in their thought process. The Isles do have some prospects they can move at the deadline if they so choose but this roster looks pretty solid at the moment and going up against any team offensively they fare pretty well. Jaroslav Halak should get the start here as he will likely go up against Sergei Bobrovsky despite both playing yesterday.
The Blue Jackets scored the first goal of the game last night in Toronto but they were shelled from there as they dropped a 5-2 decision at the Air Canada Centre and now they have to turn around and take on the red hot Islanders less than 24 hours later. Columbus was on a bit of a surge before last night's loss but they find themselves competing just to get into the postseason which would have been an afterthought for most within the organization and plenty outside as well as this was supposed to be an Eastern Conference contender. The Jackets did the right thing and locked up Bobrovsky long term but I think they're still a couple of pieces away and in this spot against a good team with the potential of having their back up goalie in I think is a nightmare.
