Detroit Red Wings vs. Nashville Predators - 1/17/15 NHL Pick, Odds, and Prediction

Rick Osentoski-USA TODAY Sports

The Nashville Predators were dealt a serious blow this week as they lost goaltender Pekka Rinne for the better part of a month with a knee injury but they were able to fill the void and net a victory in their first game without him last night in a 4-3 victory over the Washington Capitals. The Predators hold the league's best record sitting at 30-9-4 and have taken the league by storm as they have a ridiculous 18-2-1 mark at Bridgestone Arena and a 12-7-3 record on the road but they face a tough Red Wings team here that is always strong at the Joe and will be well rested for this one. Nashville has always been a tough defensive team but the emergence of Filip Forsberg and the addition of James Neal has been huge this season and if they can continue their offensive pace in the playoffs this is going to be a very tough team to slow down.

The Red Wings meanwhile have quietly pieced together an impressive season as they sit with a 24-11-9 record and are in third place in the Atlantic but they too have had to deal with the loss of their starting goaltender as Jimmy Howard is on the shelf with a groin injury. This will be a show down of backup net minders tonight and when comparing the two I have to give the edge to Detroit's Petr Mrazek who has done a very nice job filling in for Howard while Carter Hutton has struggled in relief of Rinne this season and while there is certainly more to consider here you have to like the goaltending edge for the home side. I am torn on this game as I think the Red Wings get the victory but the line is very fishy as the Preds are the best team in hockey and are getting a +130 return? In the end there is no sense looking at value when you think one team will get the victory and that's where I stand here as I like the Wings any way you shake it here.
