Edmonton Oilers vs. Buffalo Sabres - NHL Pick, Odds, and Prediction

USA TODAY Sports

The Sabres head into Edmonton on Thursday night with a losing streak rivaled by only, well, the Oilers as they have dropped 12 games in a row and sit in dead last in the NHL with a measly 31 points in 48 games. The Sabres were expected to struggle this season and a large part of that was to look ahead to the future and add some pieces to go alongside their young upcoming prospects but with 12 games lost in a row there is major speculation that the Sabres are in a full fledged tank mode and are perhaps throwing games to ensure they land the top overall selection. Buffalo does have some pieces coming up in the form of Sam Reinhart and already have some great young talent in Tyler Myers and Nikita Zadorov but if Buffalo is going to return to relevance in the Eastern Conference they need a couple more pieces which will likely include a generational talent in the form of Jack Eichel or Connor McDavid. Jhonas Enroth gets the call between the pipes as he will go up against Ben Scirvens.

The Oilers are in the midst of another lost season but unlike the Sabres the Oil had high expectations for this year and are in a huge state of uncertainty at the moment as they haven't been able to build through the draft like many expected them to and now it could result in some big names changing jerseys. Edmonton has already shipped out David Perron and Marc Arcobello and that will likely continue as the season moves along and with the trade rumors swirling around names like Jeff Petry, Taylor Hall, and Jordan Eberle it'll be interesting to see who the Oilers will let go and who they want to have as a part of their core moving forward. The Oilers to me haven't been as bad as the Sabres have been this season and Edmonton is certainly the better team on paper but that hasn't always translated into on ice success. However, this is a spot I like for the Oilers as they played the Wild very close in their last outing and I think they will use this as their coming out party offensively in a thrashing.
