The Oilers have had a tough season and have fallen well below expectations once again and while they came away victorious against the even more futile Buffalo Sabres it could have actually been a negative in disguise as Buffalo are now the front runners to land the top draft in July. Edmonton will surely be in the mix and with plenty of time left in the regular season it looks more and more clear that Buffalo is on its way to setting records for futility while the Oilers are still trying to salvage some positives from this season and some guys could be playing for contracts. The Oilers haven't had much success on the road though and now head into Calgary to take on the Flames who have been everything the Oilers have aspired to being over the last five seasons which has to hurt even more and add fuel to the fire. Ben Scrivens will get the start for the Oilers as he will go up against Jonas Hiller.
The Flames as mentioned have been one of the biggest surprises of this NHL season and currently hold down the last wild card spot in the Western Conference but with the team's behind them starting to pick up steam the Flames know they need to step up their game and that could start here against Edmonton. Calgary is a young group with enough veteran presence to make the ship sail and they are only going to get better in the next couple of years but regardless of how well they are playing and how awful the Oilers have been this is always a fierce competition as these teams, fans, organizations, and cities despise each other. Calgary is a heavy favourite and based on the comparison of how they've played this season they are for good reason but in a rivalry game in this spot I am not confident enough to lay the juice with the Flames. I do think though that we will see a lot of energy and physicality here which should give both teams some space on the ice and as such I think we see a higher scoring game than people expect.
