Calgary Flames vs. San Jose Sharks - 2/4/15 NHL Pick, Odds, and Prediction

The Sharks' valiant third period come back attempt came up short in their Monday night encounter with the Edmonton Oilers in San Jose after they were outlasted in a 13-round marathon but they did salvage a point in a game in which it looked like they were going to come away with nothing. San Jose is still in second place in the Pacific but Calgary is right on their heels and there are just seven points separating second from fifth and the playoff race will likely come down to the wire as a lot of good teams are worthy of a place in hockey's second season. San Jose is 13-9-3 on the road while the Flames are 14-10-2 at home and we will likely see a goaltending battle of Antii Niemi going up against Jonas Hiller though I wouldn't be surprised if the Sharks go with Alex Stalock here as Niemi was lit up in their last outing and could use a break in this one.

Calgary has been the surprise team in the Pacific this season and have been one of the more impressive groups in the league as they went from being preseason doormats to playoff contenders and are doing so with a relatively rag tag bunch of players that are good but not what you'd expect from a Western Conference contender. The Flames have been very solid on the blue line with Mark Giordano and TJ Brodie leading the way and they have a young group up front that is balanced with some veteran leadership and overall the recipe has worked and Calgary looks legit at the moment going 7-2-1 in their last 10 games. Many people are writing the Flames off and while I am not 100% sold on them locking up a top three spot in the Pacific there is a great chance they will land at least a wild card spot and qualify for the postseason as they have played as well as any in their division outside of Anaheim and could very well take over the role of the Avalanche from last season who shocked everyone by their end of season success. I love getting the Flames as a home dog here and there is no reason not to back them in this spot.
