The Anaheim Ducks welcomed back the front runner to win the Vezina Trophy Pekka Rinne back in a big way as they hung him up for four goals en route to a 5-2 victory and will now look to do the same against another work horse in Braden Holtby. The Ducks proved why they are the class of the Western Conference and made a statement to the Preds and the rest of the league that they are the team to beat out West and that they have their eyes set on the President's Trophy. Frederik Andersen was spectacular in the victory posting 45 saves and Jakub Silfverberg led the offense in what was a big time win for Anaheim who moves into sole possession of first place in the league standings. Anaheim will likely go back with Andersen as Ilya Bryzgalov has struggled since making his return and John Gibson is still on the shelf and the Ducks have Saturday off to recover.
The Capitals meanwhile escaped from Ottawa with a 2-1 victory in which Holtby was outstanding as he has been most of the season and after a bit of a hiccup which had them in a 2-6 stretch the Caps have won two straight and are right in the mix in the Metro division. Washington has made huge strides in the last month as the Metro has gone from a two horse race with the Pens and Isles to involving the Rangers and Capitals as there is just three points separating first from fourth and we are in for some exciting hockey down the stretch as these teams jockey for position and perhaps try to outdo one another at the trade deadline. Washington is 14-6-5 at home while the Ducks are 15-6-3 on the road which puts them tied for second in the league in road victories and with all things considered this is going to be a great matchup. The deciding factor for me will be goaltending as I think Anaheim gets the win if Andersen goes and Washington will if he doesn't. Either way this should be a low scoring affair as both teams are playing in a back to back and will be looking to play a little more conservatively here.
