The Boston Bruins have quickly played themselves out of a guaranteed playoff spot in the Atlantic division as a three game losing streak has halted any ground they were gaining on the Lightning, Canadiens, and Red Wings and now they must focus their energy on locking up one of the two Eastern Conference wild card spots. The B's were ousted by the Canadiens in the playoffs last season and have had redemption on their mind ever since and if the cards fall into place we could see one of the greatest rivalries in sports be renewed in the opening round if the Habs can win the division and the Bruins clinch a wild card spot and what a series it would be between two of the league's Original Six. The Bruins haven't had the same swagger this season that we are used to seeing and teams seem to have figured out a way to beat them at their own game and the Flames will look to do the same with a big time matchup on Monday night.
Calgary has been as exciting as they come in the Western Conference this season and heading into tonight's pivotal encounter with the Bruins they sit in fourth place in the Pacific but are right in the thick of things with the Sharks and Canucks. The Flames are still given virtually no shot by onlookers outside of Calgary to land a playoff spot as many see the competition level being too strong but they have silenced their critics all season and could very well do what the Avalanche did last year and go from being a league doormat to making the playoffs the following season. The road is a tough one for the Flames and I am a bit concerned with the makeup of their roster as it pertains to success in the playoffs but they would gladly take that chance and fall short than not be given the opportunity at all and it will be very interesting to see how they perform down the stretch. This is a tight match up and the odds reflect it and while the Flames have been strong all season I think the Bruins demonstrate what it takes to stay at a high level for many years and I think they end their losing ways with an inspired effort on Monday.
