Carolina Hurricanes vs. New York Islanders - 2/17/15 NHL Pick, Odds, and Prediction

USA TODAY Sports

The Islanders lost a tough one last night to the New York Rangers and were prevented from taking the first four contests against their rivals in the process as they blew multiple leads and dropped an exciting 6-5 decision in Uniondale. The Isles are now just two points up on the Rangers and Penguins for top spot in the Metro division but they can pad that lead with a win on the road here against a Hurricanes team that sits in last place in the division but is coming off a nice win last night on the road against the Ottawa Senators. New York looks as though they will be playoff bound as they have been as consistent as they come this season and with so much talent offensively, defensively, and between the pipes it would be hard to deny that should not only be a playoff team but one that can compete for a Stanley Cup. Chad Johnson could get the call as Jaroslav Halak started last night and he will go up against Anton Khudobin who will likely fill in for Cam Ward who won in Ottawa yesterday.

The Hurricanes haven't had a strong season but it was to be expected at the beginning of the year as they simply didn't have the pieces in place to be competitive in the Metro division or the Eastern Conference and some big names could be on their way out of town as early as this week. Carolina is expected to move defenseman Andrej Sekera but that is the tip of the iceberg as names such as Eric Staal and Cam Ward who have been staples in this organization for years have also been mentioned and it wouldn't shock too many people to see them go. Jeff Skinner is another name on the block as management has grown tired of his inconsistencies and the youngster could be better served continuing his career elsewhere though I doubt the team will give up on him this early in his career. With all things considered for tonight this is a rebound spot for the Isles who need to come back and show some resolve after a tough loss and I think they do it regardless of who is starting in goal for either side.
