San Jose Sharks vs. Montreal Canadiens - 3/2/15 NHL Pick, Odds, and Prediction

USA TODAY Sports

Montreal has asserted themselves not only as a contender in the Eastern Conference but one of the favourites to win the Stanley Cup this season as they have played very well in the new year and are atop the Eastern Conference standings with 89 points. The Habs have been lights out on the road this season and have a league high 19 wins away from home and they'll look to make it 20 with another strong effort here this time against a Sharks side looking to stay in the mix in the Pacific division. Montreal will likely be an active partner in today's trade deadline as they are rumored to be after a number of players including those from their arch rivals and if they can add a piece or two to give them that much more depth and balance they will be very tough to slow down. Carey Price will get the call here as he will go up against Antii Niemi.

San Jose continues to battle in the Pacific division and with the season drawing near a close they need to make a push now or run the risk of missing the playoffs as the division and Conference are incredibly close and will likely come down to the final day of the season. The Sharks have dropped three in a row and have fallen into fifth place in the Pacific division and are five points back of the final wild card spot in the Western Conference so they know full well that tonight is an absolute must win and if they can get it against a very solid Montreal side it could set up the confidence they need to make a playoff push. While I am not incredibly confident in this game I do think the Sharks show up in a must win but as a play here I think the total is the better option and if San Jose is going to win they'll need to keep the Canadiens off the scoresheet as Price is the best goaltender in the NHL.
