After a very busy evening in the NHL last night, we could all use a bit of a breather. We’ve got a relatively tame five games on tap for this evening, but there should be some good hockey mixed in there. Let’s check out today’s headlines before we get settled.

Antti Niemi, G, San Jose Sharks: Niemi posted 35 saves in a big-time shutout effort over the flailing Predators last night, helping his team to a 2-0 win. Helping out on the offensive side were Tomas Hertl, who had a goal and an assist, and Chris Tierney, who bagged a pair of helpers.
This was Niemi’s second shutout of Nashville this year. San Jose is now 34-26-8, good enough for fifth in the Pacific but trailing in the Wild Card race by three points.

The Kings are now 4-0-1 in their last five, jumping over the Jets for the second Wild Card spot in the West.

Brad Richards, C, Chicago Blackhawks: Richards got to play the hero last night against the Coyotes, scoring the game-winning goal a the 12:49 mark in the third. His tally would give Chicago a 2-1 victory.
The Blackhawks peppered Arizona goalie Mike Smith with shots (44 all together) and eventually it paid off.
This was Richards’ first goal in 24 games, and his 900th point in the NHL.

Brian Elliott, G, St. Louis Blues: Another stellar goalie duel was going on in the Flyers-Blues game. Elliott came out on top in this one, bagging 28 saves in an eventual 1-0 shootout win. On the other side, Steve Mason posted 35 saves of his own in a valiant effort.
This marked Ken Hitchcock’s 700th NHL win. He’s the fourth coach to that number in league history.
