It was another game where the Calgary Flames had a chance to pick up two points and instead have to look back at it as a missed opportunity. Calgary held a 2-1 lead in the third period against the Columbus Blue Jackets and could only find a way to come up with one point overall. Artem Anisimov tied the game for the Blue Jackets and ex-Flame Rene Bourque scored the game winning goal in the final minute of overtime. The Flames got goals from Sean Monahan and Jiri Hudler, but it wasn’t enough overcome Columbus in this one. It seems that most nights the top line of Monahan, Hudler, and Johnny Gaudreau find a way to produce offense, but they aren’t getting much help from the rest of the lineup. Calgary out shot Columbus 40-26 but Sergei Bobrovsky kept the Blue Jackets in the game with some tremendous goaltending. The one point allowed the Flames to actually gain ground on the Los Angeles Kings, who fell 4-1 to the Vancouver Canucks on Saturday afternoon. Calgary now leads Los Angeles by two points for third place in the Pacific Division standings. Kari Ramo played well for the Flames, but he wasn’t able to make the big save when the club needed it most. Now Calgary needs to bounce back as they continue their home stand on Monday night against a Colorado Avalanche club that sent them to a tough defeat last week. The Flames will host the Dallas Stars on Wednesday night as they close out their home stand. Calgary has lost three of their last four games overall.

Calgary Flames vs. Colorado Avalanche - 3/23/15 NHL Pick, Odds, and Prediction

The Colorado Avalanche will look to double up on their win over the Flames last week and continue playing solid hockey as they head down the home stretch. If not for a late blow third period lead against the Anaheim Ducks on Friday night the Avalanche would be entering Monday night’s contest with a four game winning streak. Colorado is 7-2-1 over their last 10 games. Head coach Patrick Roy will have you believe that his club still has a chance at making the post season, but being eight points behind Winnipeg with 11 games remaining makes that pretty far fetched. Against the Ducks the Avalanche trailed 1-0 heading into the third period before Jarome Iginla and Ryan O’Reilly scored to give Colorado the lead. O’Reilly’s goal game short handed at 7:19 of the final frame and it appeared it might be enough to lead the Avs to a victory. Instead the Ducks got the equalizer less than two minutes later and scored the game winner 1:25 into overtime to send the Avalanche to a 3-2 defeat. Semyon Varlamov played extremely well, stopping 37 of the 40 shots he faced in the loss. Matt Duchene led Colorado with five shots on goal in the contest.

Calgary has struggled down the stretch here when they’ve had opportunities to really help themselves solidify a playoff spot. It seems less like the pressure is getting the best of them and more like the lack of depth is. If the Flames want to win on Monday night and hold off the Kings the rest of the way they’re going to need some more production from their other lines.
