We’re heading into a pretty good night of NHL hockey this evening; there are seven games on the schedule. Before we settle in, let’s check out some of the notable players and situations out there in the news.

Justin Abdelkader, LW, Detroit Red Wings: There was just one game yesterday that needed more than three periods to decide, and this was it. Abdelkader scored 24 seconds into overtime on a power play to give the Red Wings a 2-1 victory over the Blues.
Detroit is now 39-21-11 and third in the Atlantic Division. They’re five points ahead of the Bruins in the standings.

NHL News: Player News and Updates for 3/23/15

J.T. Brown, RW, Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Speaking of the Bruins, they didn’t fare so well against the Lightning last night. Brown posted a goal and an assist--as did Vladislav Namestnikov--as the Bolts broke their 10-game losing streak to Boston yesterday in Tampa with a 5-3 victory.
The Lightning had been 0-8-2 in their past 10 against Boston, and this win brings them to within two points of the Canadiens for first in the East.

Derek Stepan, C, New York Rangers: The Rangers were all over the Ducks last night at the Garden. Stepan posted two goals and an assist in the 7-2 win, while Keith Yandle managed three assists of his own on a strong evening.
New York is now 46-18-7 on the season and in first place in the NHL. They’re tied with the Canadiens in points (99) but have played fewer games and have the most regulation/overtime wins (42).

Alexander Edler, D, Vancouver Canucks: This one was pretty tight for most of the way, but the Canucks ended up edging the Coyotes last night in Glendale 3-1. Edler posted a goal, as did Yannick Weber, who also had an assist.
The Canucks move to 42-26-4 with this win, and have gotten victories in four of their last five games.
