The Colorado Avalanche have had a disappointing season by their standards as they have gone from winning the Central division to battling for a wild card spot and with 10 games left anf 10 points back it doesn't look good for the Avs this season. Colorado is a good hockey team and will be for many years moving forward but they were just too inconsistent this season especially away from home and with the talent level of the top teams in the West being so high the Avs really didn't have a shot after a slow start stunted their momentum. The Avs are 6-3-1 in their last 10 games and have really come along since the all-star break but with very little time remaining it looks like they are just playing out the string at this point. Semyon Varlamov will get the call as he will go up against Ben Scrivens for Edmonton.
The Oilers meanwhile have been out of the picture since November and are in the midst of another lost season in what will certainly be a long and grueling off season for management and players. Edmonton has shown flashes of improvement but it is hard not to when you have had three first overall draft picks in the last five years and have a ton of youngsters on the team but they haven't been able to piece it all together yet and frankly time is running out on this experiment. The Oilers won't just give players away though as they will have to get a solid return before doing anything drastic and while that may come in the offseason they can't focus on it for the next two weeks until their season ends. Edmonton has been playing better of late but this Avs team is still technically in the mix for a playoff spot and until someone tells them they're out I think they continue to play well.
