After playing some good hockey recently the New Jersey Devils have fallen back into their low scoring ways. New Jersey has lost three consecutive games and scored just three goals in total during those losses.

Tuesday night in Washington things got a little bit better for the Devils, but it still wasn’t enough to find a way to win.

Carolina Hurricanes vs. New Jersey Devils - 3/28/15 NHL Pick, Odds, and Prediction

USA TODAY Sports

Trailing 2-0 late in the second period and a man down, Travis Zajac connected for his 11th goal of the season with the Devils short handed to get them back in the game. New Jersey controlled the third period, but it looked like it would all be for naught until Steve Bernier scored with just 30 seconds remaining in regulation to get the game into overtime.

Things ended shortly after that as the Capitals would net the game winner just 1:13 into the extra session, but the Devils will be looking to build on some of the momentum they drew from their come back.

Cory Schneider played well once again for the Devils but he just has not gotten any consistent support from this Devils offense all season long. New Jersey ranks 28th in the National Hockey League in goals per game, averaging just 2.19 on the year.

On the other side of the spectrum there is the Carolina Hurricanes. While the effort hasn’t necessarily resulted in wins lately, the Hurricanes have been playing some extremely competitive hockey against stiff competition.

Losses last week against the New York Rangers and Chicago Blackhawks could have easily went the other was, as Carolina dominated both of those games for extremely long stretches.

This is a young hockey club that has infused more and more youth as the season has gone along, and it looks like they might have some pieces to work with moving forward.

Thursday night they hosted the struggling Pittsburgh Penguins, and the Hurricanes really took it to them after falling behind early. Eric Staal’s 20th goal of the season tied the game at 1-1 just 1:11 after the Penguins had taken the lead. Ryan Murphy would add his third goal of the season to give the Hurricanes a 2-1 lead heading into the first intermission.

In the second period it was Jay McClement and Alexander Semin scoring goals for Carolina, and Andrei Nestrasil scored his seventh of the season in the third as the Hurricanes went on to the 5-2 win.

When Semin gets on the scoreboard it’s clear that things are going your way if you’re a Hurricanes fan. While the Semin era will surely be over after this season in Carolina there is plenty of reason to be excited for the future of Carolina hockey.

Carolina is just a slight favorite in this one but with the way they have looked recently they look like a good bet on Saturday night. If the Hurricanes can score a couple of goals it might be too much for New Jersey’s offense to overcome.
