It was only a matter of time before the bubble burst, but now the Ottawa Senators are hoping they still have enough left in the tank with nine games remaining in their season.

Andrew Hammond has been spectacular thus far for the Senators, but he has been looking a little shakier these last few games. Thursday night against the New York Rangers, Hammond came up with his worst performance of the season.

Hammond surrendered five goals on 22 shots before being pulled, but it was the third New York goal that was the real back breaker. The Rangers had taken a 2-1 lead after Curtis Lazar evened the score with his fifth goal of the season, and after an Ottawa turnover in the neutral zone Hammond was unable to control a shot from Derek Stepan. The puck flipped up over Hammond and fell behind him in the crease where Chris Kreider deposited it to give New York a 3-1 lead.

Ottawa was completely dominated in this game and did nothing in the second period to get themselves back in it. New York added two more goals as they cruised to a 5-1 win.

While the loss was extremely disappointing for Ottawa, they did get a little bit of help from the Anaheim Ducks who defeated the Boston Bruins in overtime on Thursday night.

It was clear heading into the contest that head coach Dave Cameron was worried about the state of his team despite all of their success lately. Cameron cited the lack of practice time for his team starting to slip in certain areas. There isn’t much time left to make sure they get back to their winning ways, and it starts on Saturday night in Toronton.

Toronto is coming off yet another loss against a Florida Panthers club that they can only one day hope to look like.

The Panthers are full of youth and are an up and coming team in the National Hockey League. Toronto is looking to build their farm system and prove to their fan base that they have the right people in place to move this organization forward.

These clubs played an even first period but Florida took control in the second with three unanswered goals against Jonathan Bernier. James Reimer relieved Bernier and stopped all 11 shots he faced in the contest, but it was too little too late for the Leafs.

Sam Carrick scored his first goal of the season for the Maple Leafs in the 4-1 defeat.

Toronto has now lost seven straight games heading into Saturday night’s meeting with the Senators. Ottawa defeated Toronto 5-3 last Saturday.

This is a mirror image of what we had last week with the Senators needing a win against a miserable Toronto club. The Maple Leafs always play the Senators well, and they fought hard in that one but still came up short. There’s really only a few ways to play this one despite Ottawa being such a heavy favorite.
