Our busy stretch of NHL games continues to chug along, as there are a half-dozen games coming tonight. While we’re waiting on those pucks to drop, let’s check out some of the players who are making headlines this morning.
Alex Ovechkin, LW, Washington Capitals: A three-goal third period sent the Capitals past the Rangers last night at the Garden. Ovechkin scored twice in the 5-2 win; Jason Chimera also logged a pair of goals.
The Caps were down 2-1 at the end of the first period, then Braden Holtby clamped down on his way to 23 saves on 25 shots.
Ovechkin now has 49 goals on the year, leading the NHL. The Caps are 41-25-10 on the season, one point behind Pittsburgh for third in the Metropolitan.

Jaromir Jagr, RW, Florida Panthers: The Panthers-Senators game yesterday was very important as far as playoff chances, and Florida came out on top here. They won 4-2 in Ottawa, with Jagr logging a pair of goals.
Jonathan Huberdeau managed two assists and net-minder Dan Ellis put up 25 saves.
Florida is now 35-26-15; they’re four points behind Boston for the second Wild Card slot in the East.
John Tavares, C, New York Islanders: The Isles got a huge victory yesterday against the Red Wings in Uniondale, coming out on top 5-4. Tavares put up three assists here, while Cal Clutterbuck was able to find the back of the net on a short-handed goal in the second.
Tomas Tatar put up a goal and an assist for the Red Wings.
The Islanders are now 45-27-5 on the year, two points ahead of Pittsburgh for second in the Metropolitan.
Jiri Hudler, C, Calgary Flames: The Flames got a win over the Predators last night in Nashville, coming out on top in a 5-2 game. Hudler put up a goal and two assists, while Jonas Hiller managed 27 saves on 29 shots. Calgary is now 41-28-7 on the year and one point ahead of the defending champion Kings for third place in the Pacific.
Nashville falls to 47-22-8 and is in first place in the Central.
