The New York Rangers head into New Jersey on Tuesday night looking to secure home ice advantage throughout the Eastern Conference playoffs as they can claim top spot with a victory in any one of their final three games. The Blue Shirts sit three points up on the Canadiens for the top seed and also have a game in hand meaning if the Rangers can manage just two points in their final three contests they will lock up the top seed and that looks likely to occur as early as tonight. Cam Talbot will get the call as Henrik Lundqvist went last night against Columbus and Talbot's play could factor in to whether he sees time in the postseason or whether they will stick with the Swedish national in Lundqvist who guided them to the Cup finals a season ago. Talbot will go up against Corey Schneider who was victim of being a great goaltender on a bad team this season.
The Devils are well back of the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference as they sit 17 points out heading into tonight's game and while they haven't had the year many expected they do have some bright spots as Schneider has been spectacular and they could get the formerly departed Ilya Kovalchuk back as early as next season as he ventures an NHL come back. New Jersey ended up being sellers at the trade deadline and rightfully so as they had a handful of aging stars that aren't part of the team's long term plan and while they yielded a modest return it was still the right thing for management to do and now they can focus on a proper rebuild. The price will be on the Rangers here without question and I fully expect Talbot to try and win the job heading into the playoffs but the better play here is on the total as New York is playing in a back to back, have their “backup” starting, are on the road and are a victory away from clinching the East. Add in the stellar numbers of Corey Schneider and the Devils desperately looking for a win and this one screams a low scoring affair.
