The Edmonton Oilers don’t ever like helping the Calgary Flames, but that’s exactly what they did on Tuesday night.

With the Flames in a hotly contested playoff race with the Los Angeles Kings, they were rooting desperately for the rival Oilers to help them out. Edmonton obliged, shocking much of the hockey world.

Hosting a Kings club that embarrassed them five days prior by scoring eight goals, Edmonton looked like a club that vowed not to allow that to happen again in front of their home crowd.

Matt Fraser’s seventh goal of the season gave the Oilers a 1-0 lead before Jake Muzzin would tie things up for Los Angeles, but Benoit Pouliot would make a splendid defensive play that led to a break away and score his 18th of the season to put the Oilers back in front for good. Tyler Pitlick and Fraser added third period goals in the 4-2 win.

Edmonton was able to take advantage of a Kings club that looked a step slow on this night, and they found ways to get the puck behind backup goaltender Martin Jones, who for some reason garnered the start in a must win game for the Kings.

Now the Oilers will look to finish their season strong as they host the San Jose Sharks on Thursday night before traveling to Vancouver on Saturday to take on the Canucks.

The Oilers won’t have a chance to spoil anything for the Sharks since San Jose has already been eliminated from playoff contention. San Jose is a dead man walking at this point, with many players and coaches not likely to return next season.

San Jose was still alive heading into the second game of a home-and-home with the lowly Arizona Coyotes, but they couldn’t get the job done. Monday night they hosted the Dallas Stars, another club that has been eliminated from contention, and watched as they skated circles around them on their home ice.

Joe Thornton’s 16th goal of the season came on the power play in the second period, but the Sharks were already trailing 3-0 at the time. Dallas would add two more goals in the third period on their way to a 5-1 win. Alex Stalock returned between the pipes for this one but allowed five goals on just 25 shots in the loss.

This is a tough one to call on Thursday night because it’s hard to believe in the Sharks at all at this point, but even harder to expect the Oilers to put together back-to-back solid efforts. San Jose will probably find a way to look good in this one before allowing the Kings to decimate them to end the season.
