The Washington Capitals take the ice at the Verizon Center against the New York Islanders in game five.
The New York Islanders return to the Verizon Center for game five with Washington with the series knotted at two games apiece. The Islanders could have put a stranglehold on the series with a win in game four on home ice but their high scoring offense never got going and the Capitals took advantage with a 2-1, overtime victory on Tuesday night. The Isles lone goal came off the stick of Cal Clutterbuck with under 13 seconds remaining in the opening period before the game turned in to a defensive struggle over the final 40 minutes. Jaroslav Halak was saddled with the loss with a 28 save performance as the teams have played consecutive overtimes.

The Washington Capitals knew they were returning home for a game five Thursday versus the Islanders. The only question was whether the series would be tied at 2-2 or they would be facing a 3-1 deficit and possible elimination on home ice. It was the former as the Caps avoided back to back overtime defeats with Tuesday’s 2-1 win. Nicklas Backstrom saved his team from more disappointment when he rifled a long range shot from the point past Jaroslav Halak at 11:09 of the extra session for a goal in his third consecutive contest. Alex Ovechkin opened the scoring in the opening period which is the only time Washington has scored first in this series. Braden Holtby survived a 37 shot barrage from the New Yorkers to pick up the win.
The over is 3-0-1 in Islanders last 4 Thursday games while New York are 0-4 in their last 4 when their opponent allows 2 goals or less in their previous game and 1-11 in their last 12 after allowing 2 goals or less in their previous game. The Capitals are 4-0 in their last 4 when their opponent allows 2 goals or less in their previous game while the over is 3-0-1 in Capitals last 4 home games vs. a team with a winning road record with Washington going 6-1 in their last 7 after scoring 2 goals or less in their previous game. I’m still waiting for goalies but lean Washington for now but please check back…
