Round 2 of the 2015 NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs is off and running, as we saw the initial action taking place out on the ice last night. We’ve got more to look forward to this evening, so in the meantime let’s check out our daily outlook on the notable players and situations around the league.

Braden Holtby, G, Washington Capitals: The Capitals caught the defending Eastern Conference champions sleeping, and were able to get a leg-up in the second round series 1-0 at the Garden last night.
Joel Ward snuck in a goal with just two seconds remaining in regulation, breaking a 1-1 tie against a sloppy Rangers defense that was simply playing for overtime. Holtby posted a strong game with some nice saves, stopping 31 of 32 shots that came his way.
Alex Ovechkin also played well with a goal and an assist.
Game 2 in what’s sure to be a very intense series comes early tomorrow. New York needs to be on their game (and scoring) if they want to even things up.

Corey Perry, RW, Anaheim Ducks: Now let’s check out last night’s other game, the Ducks-Flames matchup.
This one wasn’t even close; Anaheim overpowered Calgary on the way to a 6-1 win in the series opener, getting some big performances from key players. Perry managed two goals and two assists on seven shots, while Ryan Getzlaf logged a goal and three assists of his own.
This was the Ducks’ first game in eight days; they hadn’t been on the ice since sweeping the Jets in the first round. That week of rest and preparation did them well, as they simply overmatched the Flames in this first game.
We’ll find out if Calgary can bounce back in Game 2 on Sunday.
