The Canucks look to spoil the party in Calgary on Wednesday night as the two rivals battle in Western Canada at the Saddledome.
The Vancouver Canucks have been a staple with playoff hockey over the last 10 seasons and while they managed to slide in again last season they were quickly bounced by a team on the rise and a team they play to open this season in the Calgary Flames. Vancouver has undergone a youth movement and expectations aren't nearly as lofty as they have been in year's past but they will still be a competitive group during their rebuilding phase and they would like nothing more than a win on opening night against the Flames. Ryan Miller is still back stopping the team in the crease and both Henrik and Daniel Sedin and Alex Burrows there for a veteran presence but it is clear this team is about its youth as guys like Jake Virtanen, Brandon Sutter, and Bo Horvat will be leaned on for offensive production.

The Flames meanwhile are looking to live up to last season's magical run as they were a team projected to finish in the league basement and made it to the Pacific division finals against the Anaheim Ducks. Calgary was spectacular in the second half of the year and that was without their best defenseman in Mark Giordano who is back in the mix alongside TJ Brodie, Dougie Hamilton, and Dennis Wideman which makes Calgary a very tough team at the back. Up front there is no shortage of talent either as the likes of Johnny Gaudreau, Sean Monahan, Jiri Hudler, and Sam Bennett will be providing the offense and if they can recreate last season's efforts they could very well go on a long playoff run once again. This game to me is going to be very energetic and while both teams have some nice pieces on the back end I think the offense wins this one and the side here is my strongest play of opening night.
