The Connor McDavid era begins for Edmonton on Thursday as the prized first overall pick leads the Oilers into St. Louis to take on the Blues.
The Edmonton Oilers have fallen on hard times over the last 10 years or so and while the lottery balls have fallen in their favour they have yet to get out of their tailspin. Until now. While it still remains to proven how well Edmonton will do with McDavid in the lineup he is certainly a talented player and one that is drawing comparisons to Sidney Crosby who single handily turned the Pittsburgh Penguins franchise around. The Oilers begin the season on the road against a very good St. Louis Blues team which is not an ideal situation and while Edmonton shouldn't have trouble scoring goals this season they may have a ton of trouble stopping them. Cam Talbot is a nice pickup in goal but his sample size is quite small and the Edmonton blue line still nees a bit of work despite addressing some holes in the offseason. Talbot is expected to get the start as he will go up against Brian Elliott.

The Blues were ousted in the first round of last year's playoffs by the Minnesota Wild and have been itching to get back on the ice ever since as they attempt once again at claiming the Stanley Cup. St. Louis is loaded offensively with guys like David Backes, Alex Steen, Jaden Schwartz, Paul Stastny and Vladimir Tarasenko and they brought in Troy Brouwer who has a winning pedigree thanks to his time in Chicago and their defense is among the league's best with Alex Pietrangelo and Kevin Shattenkirk manning the point. St. Louis will always be a Cup favourite until they get into the playoffs but as a regular season team they should be among the game's best again and in this spot against a talented but still inexperienced Oilers team I think the Blues get the best of them in regulation.
