The NHL is officially back after their Christmas break, and we’ve got another busy evening of action ahead of us. We’ve got nine games to look forward to today, but before we get started let’s check out some of the notable players and stats in the news.

Jack Eichel, C, Buffalo Sabres: The rookie Eichel showed his stuff yesterday against the Bruins at TD Garden, logging a pair of goals and two assists in a 6-3 comeback victory.
Eichel played at Boston University last year and had lots of fans in the crowd. He helped the Sabres get to 15-16-4 with last night’s win. (they’re 4-1-1 in their past six).
Buffalo scored three times in a span of 4:03 in the third period, turning a 3-1 deficit into a 4-3 advantage.

Steven Stamkos, C, Tampa Bay Lightning: Speaking of scoring quickly, Stamkos bagged two goals in a span of 32 seconds during the second period last night against the Blue Jackets at Amalie Arena.
The Lightning would go on to win 5-2 and move to 18-15-3. They’ve won two of their first three games in this six-game home-stand.
As for the Jackets, they’ve lost two games of a three-game trip thus far and stand at 13-21-3 on the year.

Sidney Crosby, C, Pittsburgh Penguins: Crosby and defenseman Kris Letang were able to return to the Pens lineup yesterday, helping the team to a 3-1 win over the Wild at Xcel Energy Center.
Crosby put up a goal and an assist on three shots, while Letang managed a pair of assists. Matthew Murray logged 25 saves.
It was the second straight win for the Pens, who lost their first four games under new coach Mike Sullivan.

Brendan Smith, D, Detroit Red Wings: The Red Wings got a game-winning goal from Luke Glendening last night in the third period as they edged out the Predators 3-2 at Bridgestone Arena.
Smith played well also, posting a goal and an assist on three shots.
The Red Wings are now 18-10-7 on the season and 7-3-3 on the road. The Preds sit at 17-12-6.
