NHL Daily Updates: Checking in on the Latest News, Daily Schedule and More
January 11, 2016
The NHL is easing up a bit tonight after a busy weekend, but we’ve still got four matchups on the schedule. Let’s check out today’s headlines before we get settled in for the action.
Alex Ovechkin, LW, Washington Capitals: Ovechkin bagged two goals on six shots against the Senators at Verizon Center yesterday en route to a 7-1 blowout win. That puts him in the 500-goal club, one of the most exclusive in the NHL.
It took Ovechkin 801 career games to get to 500, which is the fifth-fastest in league history. He’s got 26 goals so far this year, which leads the NHL.
Nicklas Backstrom put up three assists in yesterday’s game, and Philipp Grubauer got the win on 32 saves.

Marian Hossa, RW, Chicago Blackhawks: Hossa put up a pair of goals on three shots last night against the Avalanche at United Center, and teammate Patrick Kane logged two scores on six shots.
The end result was a 6-3 victory, which puts the defending champs up to 27-13-4 on the season. They’re within four points of the Stars for first in the Central Division.
As for Colorado, they’re now 21-19-3.
Riley Sheahan, C, Detroit Red Wings: There was a trio of 2-1 games last night, and one of them belonged to the Red Wings, who beat the Ducks at Honda Center.
Sheahan scored the game-winner with less than four minutes left in the third. Tomas Tatar put up the other goal, and Petr Mrazek logged 30 saves.
The Red Wings are 22-13-7, and Mrazek has allowed only one goal in each of his past three outings.
Al Montoya, G, Florida Panthers: One of the other 2-1 games belonged to the Panthers, who kept their run going against the Oilers at Rexall Place.
Montoya posted 24 saves on 25 shots, helping Florida extend the longest winning streak in franchise history at 12 games.
This was a very physical game; Jaromir Jagr and Jonathan Huberdeau scored the goals.
The Panthers sit at 26-12-4 and remain the hottest team in the league.
