We’ve still got a few days to wait before the NHL’s All-Star game, but in the meantime there’s plenty to talk about. Let’s take our daily look around the league and see which players are in the news.

The Flames’ Dennis Wideman has been suspended indefinitely by the NHL, stemming from a hit on linesman Don Henderson on Wednesday.
Wideman will have a hearing after the break, but could get a mandatory 10-game suspension if the league believes the hit was intentional. We’ll have to see what they decide, but the general consensus seems to be that he’ll get slapped with a suspension.

The Kings’ Kyle Clifford is getting a conditioning stint in the AHL. He’s coming off an upper-body injury and hasn’t seen the ice since December 6th.

Chris Phillips talked a little bit about his injury yesterday, saying that he hasn’t made a whole lot of progress in his recovery.
Phillips is trying to get back from a cracked vertebrae, and says his status hasn’t changed much since September. He hasn’t been skating very much, and it would be a surprise to see him back on the ice this season.
This may even be the end of Phillips’ career; his contract is expiring and he’s pushing 38 years of age.

The Jets’ Blake Wheeler reportedly got an invitation to the All-Star game after Jonathan Toews pulled out due to an illness.
Wheeler turned down the All-Star appearance because he had already made plans with his family. He has 13 goals and 48 points in his 49 appearances this year so far.
As for the Jets, they still have Dustin Byfuglien representing them at the All-Star game.

The Oilers’ Connor McDavid is currently spending time with the AHL affiliate in Bakersfield. Even though he’s not playing in games, he’s been skating at practice.
McDavid has begun to take contact at the practice sessions, and says he feels “pretty good.” If all goes as planned, he’ll be back right after the All-Star break.
