NHL Daily Updates: Checking in on the Latest News, Daily Schedule and More
January 30, 2016
The weekend slate of All-Star activity is starting in the NHL today, which will provide a welcome distraction to the fact that there won’t be any meaningful games on the ice until Tuesday. For now, let’s check out our daily look at the headlines.
The Blues’ Jaden Schwartz seems to be inching closer to a return, though don’t expect to see him in St. Louis’ first game back from the break.
Schwartz needs to get in a full practice before the coaching staff assesses his progress in returning from his ankle injury, but with that said it shouldn’t take more than a couple of days for him to get the green light once he’s skating with his teammates again. Assuming all goes as planned we’d expect to see him this coming week.

Even though the Leafs’ Morgan Reilly could fetch a nice return in a trade, sources close to the team believe he’s completely off the table for any deals.
Reilly has a lot to offer as a scoring defender. He has 22 points in his 48 games so far and is just beginning to tap into his potential. It would take a mammoth offer from another team to get him out of Toronto.
Jonathan Toews was hit with a one-game suspension for skipping the All-Star game due to an illness, which will give him eight days of rest between games.
The Blackhawks seem to think the ban is acceptable, since it’s the best thing for Toews’ health right now. With the extra downtime, expect him to come back strong when he hit’s the ice again.
The Flames are reportedly on the fence when it comes to deciding if they’ll be buyers or sellers at the trade deadline, which comes on February 29.
If they decide to cut bait with some guys, expect guys like Kris Russell, David Jones, Jiri Hudler, Jonas Hiller and Karri Ramo to be on the block as the team tries to get future value.
The Leafs’ William Nylander has been out for around a month, and now we know why. In addition to his concussion, he also had to get over appendicitis. If it was just the concussion, he would have been back sooner.
Nylander played for the AHL yesterday, so he’s not too far from a return.
