Today is the last day without hockey in the NHL, as the teams will be getting back to business after the All-Star break tomorrow. In the meantime, there are still plenty of news items out there to touch on in our daily wrap-up, so let’s see what’s new right now.

Let’s start out today with some Hurricanes news. The team placed defenseman Brett Pesce on injured reserve, which indicates that he may have re-aggravated his previous condition (lower body). Pesce has 12 points over 41 games and has played pretty well thus far.
To fill the roster spot, the team recalled Ryan Murphy from the AHL. He has five goals and 16 points in 22 minor league games this year. In his 18 NHL appearances, he’s logged four assists.

Now let’s check out the Coyotes, specifically Mike Smith. He is hopeful that he’ll return from his core muscle injury by the end of this month. If all goes well, he could start practicing this week.
Smith has been gone for seven weeks overall; his initial timeline was 8-10 weeks. That said, he could be out for longer than that prognosis.
In the meantime, the Coyotes have done just fine with Louis Domingue, so they’ll probably wait until Smith is definitely 100 percent before putting him back out on the ice.

Good news for Oilers fans. The team recalled Connor McDavid yesterday from AHL Bakersfield.
McDavid got in some contact practices while he was down in the minors, and by all accounts he should be able to return this week if things go well. In 13 games so far, he’s got 12 points.

The Jackets recalled goalie Anton Forsberg yesterday. He’s got a .907 save percentage in Lake Erie with a 2.58 GAA.
In four games for the Jackets this year, Forsberg has saved 88 of 97 overall shots, but has just one win.
