The Leafs look to shake off a 2-1 loss to the Lightning on Monday night as they head into Washington to battle the league leading Capitals.
The Maple Leafs have had a tough season and if not evident before it is very clear now that they are in a full rebuild mode as they sent some of their best pieces away at the trade deadline on Monday. The Buds are sacrificing short term success in hopes of playing the long game and after they sent away James Reimer and Roman Polak it is clear they are going to be in the running for a top end draft pick and things don’t get easier tonight against the Capitals. Toronto sits in last place in the NHL standings and are the front runners in the Auston Matthews sweepstakes and with a 12-19-2 record on the road this season it’ll be tough for them to get up for this one against the Caps.

Washington meanwhile cemented themselves as the team to beat in the East last night as they upended the Pittsburgh Penguins at the Verizon Center, and while the Pens haven’t been the group many expected them to be this year they do still pose a threat to the Caps’ claim as the best in the conference. Washington is loaded across the board and made some moves at the deadline as well and even though they are in a back to back here they are still very heavy favourites and should be treated as such. The Leafs dropped a 2-1 decision at home against the Lightning so there is no reason to think the Capitals can’t get a repeat effort at the very least at home and I am willing to lay the goal and a half in this spot.
