The Capitals and Flyers meet up in Washington, D.C. on Thursday night as they kick off their Eastern Conference quarterfinal series at the Verizon Center.

The Philadelphia Flyers head into the Stanley Cup playoffs as a wild card in the Eastern Conference and they will look to spoil the party against the Cup favourites from Washington who locked up the President’s Trophy as the league’s best regular season team. The Flyers backed their way into the playoffs and while they have the Bruins to thank for their seasonal collapse their reward is a date with the league’s deepest and most dangerous team and they don’t stand much of a chance from the perspective of many prognosticators. The Flyers were 18-17-6 on the road during the regular season and will face off against a Caps side that led the league in points and goal differential and was a ridiculous 29-8-4 at home. Steve Mason will get the start in the Flyers’ goal as he will face off against Braden Holtby.

Washington Capitals vs. Philadelphia Flyers - 4/14/16 NHL Pick, Odds, and Prediction

The Capitals head into the playoffs with a huge chip on their shoulder as many have seen this story before with another strong regular season but without any playoff pedigree there isn’t a ton of support for them past the first round. However, this Capitals side seems to be different as they aren’t exclusively focused around the play of Alex Ovechkin and while he remains an integral part of the team’s offense they do have plenty of other weapons to work with including young Russian forward Evgeny Kuznetsov and Swedish sniper Nicklas Backstrom. The Caps are heavy favourites in this series and for good reason as they represent the best chance at a first round sweep and I think they get started the right way here with a big win at home against an overwhelmed Philly side.
