After a busy 2016 NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs weekend (not to mention some weekend eliminations), we’ve got just two matchups to look forward to tonight. In the meantime, let’s check out some of the notable players and stats in the news.
Jason Spezza, C, Dallas Stars: The Stars scored three times in the first period yesterday against the Wild at Xcel Energy Center in Game 6 of their opening-round series, then held on for dear life.
Dallas eked out a 5-4 victory, with all the Wild’s goals coming in the third period. Spezza scored a goal and assisted on three others.
The win gives the Stars a 4-2 series victory. They’ll go on to host the winner of the Blues-Blackhawks series, which finishes up with a winner-take-all Game 7 tonight.

Nicklas Backstrom, C, Washington Capitals: No one quite believed the Flyers would give the Caps this much trouble, but Philly managed to extend their first-round series to six games.
The Capitals won that Game 6 yesterday by a score of 1-0, giving them a 4-2 win in the series.
Backstrom scored the game-winning goal here in the second period, while Braden Holtby pitched the shutout on 26 saves.
Washington goes on to the second round to face the Pittsburgh Penguins, who took care of the Rangers in five games during round one. That one should be a great matchup.
John Tavares, C, New York Islanders: We had a 2OT thriller last night in Game 6 of the Islanders-Panthers series at Barclays Center. New York went into the third period down 1-0 but was able to score on a Tavares goal at 19:06 and send it to extra time. Then in the second overtime, Tavares scored again at 10:41 for the victory and the series win.
Thomas Greiss won the goalie battle here with 41 saves, getting the win over Florida’s Roberto Luongo, who had 49 saves.
This is the Islanders’ first trip to the scond round of the playoffs since 1993. They’ll face the Lightning.
