The Stanley Cup finals begin Monday when the San Jose Sharks visit the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Before the Stanley Cup finals begin we see two teams that are deep and talented which is a prerequisite for reaching the championship. The San Jose Sharks have been one of the best teams in the game for years but this will be their first trip to the finals after defeating Nashville, Los Angeles and the Blues.

The Pittsburgh Penguins went to the Cup finals in 2008 and 2009 and won it all in 2009 although that has no bearing on this match up. The Penguins defeated Presidents Cup winner Washington, the Rangers and the Lightning in a game seven 2-1 thriller Friday night.
The Sharks are lead by the offensive trio of Joe Pavelski, Logan Couture and Brent Burns with Peter DeBoer leading the way in his first season running the show which makes him something of a cult hero with SJ making their only trip to the championship in their 24 years of existence.
The Pens certainly don’t lack for star power with captain Sydney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin being household names with Carl Hagelin and Phil Kessel doing plenty of damage on the scoreboard during the postseason. The Pens also have some coaching issues worth noting with Mike Sullivan taking over the reins from Mike Johnston before the turn of the new year.
The teams also have goaltending worth noting with San Jose with Martin Jones who was picked up from Los Angeles while rookie Pitt has been winning with rookie Matt Murray who has taken over between the pipes with Marc-Andre Fleury relegated to the bench as he doesn’t seem 100% after suffering a pair of concussions.
Sharks are 10-1 in their last 11 road games vs. a team with a home winning % of greater than .600 and the over is 5-1-1 in Sharks last 7 vs. Metropolitan while going 8-2 in Sharks last 10 Monday games. The over is 4-0-4 in Penguins last 8 home games vs. a team with a road winning % of greater than .600 and thePenguins are 4-0 in their last 4 home games vs. a team with a road winning % of greater than .600 while the under is 3-0-1 in Penguins last 4 when their opponent scores 5 goals or more in their previous game. The under is 5-1-1 in the last 7 meetings in Pittsburgh and the home team is 12-4 in the last 16 meetings while the Sharks are 14-5 in the last 19 meetings.
Game one is always tough to predict but I’ll go with the Penguins although my heart is with the Sharks…
