The Chicago Blackhawks and St. Louis Blues face off at the United Center on Wednesday night as the NHL season kicks off.

The Blues head into Chicago for their season opener on Wednesday night looking to make a statement in their first game of the year as they have Stanley Cup aspirations once again and will have to go through the Hawks to get there. St. Louis has a very solid core and are now giving the reigns to Jake Allen who will no longer split time with Brian Elliott as he departed for the Calgary Flames in the offseason and with a 65-70 game projection out of him this season they know they will have a reliable goaltender who can steal them some games. St. Louis is deep across the board offensively and have two very strong defense pairings and should be considered a threat to win the Central division once again.

The Blackhawks meanwhile are right back in the mix as a potential Cup contender and have retained a number of top end forwards including last year’s Art Ross and Hart Trophy winner in Patrick Kane. Chicago will need to have a couple of their blue liners step up if Duncan Keith is forced to miss any time and they have the horses to do so as Brent Seabrook and Niklas Hjalmarsson are still on the roster, and with Corey Crawford coming off a stint with the Canadian team at the World Cup of Hockey he should be in game shape right from the first whistle. Chicago has been lights out at home over the last few seasons and you can be sure the United Center will be rocking in this one and if they can play a factor early the Hawks should be in a nice position to generate their first win of the season.

The Blues are 14-6 in their last 20 games against the Central division, 1-4 in their last five against the Western Conference, and 19-7 in their last 26 road games while the Hawks are 5-13 in their last 18 against the Central and 122-59 in their last 181 home games. The fist couple weeks of the season are going to be hard to gauge and while the Hawks to me have the deeper team I like the value on St. Louis in this one and I think they can get it done in a tough building.
