Calgary Flames vs. Edmonton Oilers - 10/14/16 NHL Pick, Odds, and Prediction

Edmonton Oilers (1-0-0) at Calgary Flames (0-1-0)

NHL Hockey: Friday, October 14, 2016 at 9:00 pm (Scotiabank Saddledome)

TV:

The Edmonton Oilers look for their second win in as many games as they head into the Saddledome to take on the Calgary Flames in the back end of a home and home.

The Flames had a woeful start to the regular season and while they did manage to put four shots past Cam Talbot they conceded seven the other way and gave their arch rivals something to smile about in their new arena grand opening. Brian Elliott looked awful in his Calgary debut and he will have to be much better if the Flames are going to rebound here and give their home fans the same reception the Oilers gave at Rogers Place on opening night. Calgary was also sloppy in the defensive zone and conceded a penalty shot and if they’re going to find their first win of the season and they will have to contain Connor McDavid who netted two of the team’s seven markers on Wednesday night.

USA TODAY Sports

The Oilers meanwhile are flying high after a strong season debut but they too need to step up in the defensive zone and get a better outing from their goaltender as Cam Talbot looked soft at times. Edmonton has supposed to be the team on the rise over the last handful of seasons but haven’t been able to crack through yet and while many believe this is the team to do it they are still going to have to shore up their play in their own zone, and while the move for Adam Larsson is a start they still have a ways to go. Edmonton has been very good in these home and home situations as they are 6-1 in their last seven in the second leg of these set ups and a sweep of their arch rivals to start the season would be a great feat.

The Oilers are 6-13 in their last 19 Friday games, 22-72 in their last 94 against the Pacific, and 17-35 in their last 52 games following a win while the Flames are 4-1 in their last five games playing on a day’s rest, 1-4 in their last five Friday games, and 3-8 in their last 11 against the Pacific. I expect a much better outing from both teams in the defensive zone tonight and Elliott needs to be sharp or he could lose his job in the early part of the season. I think Calgary bounces back and split the home and home.
