The Detroit Red Wings and Florida Panthers meet Saturday night in a NHL showdown at the BB&T Center.
The Detroit Red Wings are coming off a rough loss to the Tampa Bay Lighting in which they allowed four goals in the third period. The Red Wings controlled the game the first two periods, but Petr Mrazek got lit up by allowing five goals on 35 shots faced, and he’s allowed three or more goals in five of his last seven games. The good news for the Red Wings is that the offense was there with four different players producing at least four shots on goal, and Thomas Vanek is off to a terrific start with two goals on five shots. Mike Green also had two assists, giving him 30 overall in 75 games played with Detroit. The Detroit Red Wings have not started a year 0-2 since the 2009-10 season. Alexey Marchenko and Niklas Kronwall are questionable with injuries.

The Florida Panthers beat the New Jersey Devils in overtime and hope to take advantage with four of their first five games being at home. The star of the Panthers was goalie Roberto Luongo, who came away with 23 saves and made some critical stops late in the third period. Offensively, Aleksander Barkov came away with the game winner for Florida, while Jonathan Marchessault scored just his ninth career goal to give the Panthers the early lead in the first period. The Panthers must continue to find production from a group of guys until Jonathan Huberdeau and Nick Bjugstad return from injuries. The Florida Panthers have not started 2-0 since the 2005-06 NHL season.
The Red Wings are 5-17 in their last 22 road games and 1-7 in their last 8 vs. Eastern Conference. The Panthers are 1-4 in their last 5 games playing on 1 days rest and 4-1 in their last 5 Saturday games. The Red Wings are 10-4-1 in the last 15 meetings in Florida.
The Panthers have won five of the last eight meetings and the home team has won three of the last five meetings overall. Even with a couple of key guys out, I'm high on the Panthers this season and think they can make a run in the East. The Red Wings continue to struggle big time on the road and a third period collapse against Tampa Bay doesn't help. Look for the Panthers to get off to a 2-0 start for the first time in forever.
