The Calgary Flames and Vancouver Canucks play an NHL matchup late Saturday night at the Rogers Arena.
The Calgary Flames are playing the end of a back-to-back after getting beat up twice by the Edmonton Oilers. In two games, Brian Elliott and Chad Johnson have allowed a combined 12 goals and Calgary as a whole hasn’t been sharp on the power play, offensively or defensively. The Calgary Flames were supposed to have improved goaltending this season, but clearly that’s a concern two games into the young season. The good news for the Flames is that Michael Frolik has scored in back-to-back games and Johnny Gaudreau has been aggressive with eight shots on goal. However, the Flames clearly aren't going anywhere if they can’t get stops defensively. The Calgary Flames hope to avoid their first 0-3 start since the 2012-13 season.

The Vancouver Canucks will make their season opener when the puck drops Saturday night. The Canucks hope for a bounce back season after winning just 31 games last season and missing the playoffs for the second time in three years. The good news for Vancouver is that the addition of Loui Eriksson provides more of an offensive punch to go along with Daniel Sedin and Jannik Hansen. There’s also a young, exciting core with the Canucks led by Bo Horvat and Thatcher Demko. There’s also proven goaltending with Ryan Miller and Jacob Markstrom, guys who give Vancouver a chance to win every night. The problem with the Canucks is the lack of depth behind the veterans that make many hesitant on this team. The Vancouver Canucks have won their last two season openers.
The Flames are 0-4 in their last 4 games playing on 0 days rest and 16-35 in their last 51 road games. The Canucks are 5-11 in their last 16 Saturday games and 4-11 in their last 15 vs. Western Conference. The Flames are 6-15 in the last 21 meetings in Vancouver and 4-0 in the last 4 meetings overall.
Calgary has won the last four meetings against Vancouver but hasn't looked good at all in the first two games. The Flames should have the advantage with some games under their belt, but allowing 12 goals in those contests don't inspire much confidence. The Canucks have been decent recently in season openers and should want to get off to a good start at home in a winnable game. I like Vancouver against the struggling Flames.
