Metropolitan rivals the Washington Capitals and New York Islanders clash at the Verizon Center in NHL action.
Losing is a bad thing in the best of circumstances but losing to one of your biggest rivals is even worse. The New York Islanders know that feeling after falling to the Rangers 5-3 on Thursday. The Rangers received the game winner from Chris Kreider with Brandon Pirri, JT Miller, Mats Zuccarello and Michael Grabner also lit the lamp while Henrik Lundqvist stopping 25 shots to get the win. The Islanders rallied from a 2-0 third period hole on goals from Cal Clutterbuck and Nick Leddy with Brock Nelson also scoring in the third but Isles netminder couldn’t keep the Rangers in check and absorbed the loss.

The Washington Capitals learned that great defense and goaltending aren’t always enough to win in a 3-2, shootout defeat at defending Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh. The Penguins received goals off the sticks of Evegni Malkin and Patric Hornqvist while Phil Kessel tallied the game winner in the SO while Marc-Andre Fleury recorded 39 stops to get the victory. The Capitals offense was Andre Burakovsky who found the back of the net twice while Braden Holtby recorded 28 saves in defeat. This probably wasn’t an ideal match up for the Caps to kick off the season with the Pens raising the Stanley Cup banner which likely gave them an emotional lift.
The over is 3-0-1 in Islanders last 4 vs. Metropolitan and the Islanders are 0-5 in their last 5 vs. Eastern Conference while the Islanders are 0-5 in their last 5 overall. The under is 4-0-2 in Capitals last 6 games playing on 1 days rest and the under is 3-0-3 in Capitals last 6 when their opponent allows 5 goals or more in their previous game while the Capitals are 1-5 in their last 6 vs. Metropolitan. The Islanders are 1-4 in the last 5 meetings in Washington and the Islanders are 1-4 in the last 5 meetings while the under is 4-1-1 in the last 6 meetings.
The trends favor the Capitals and the under but with both teams opening the season without wins I would expect an ‘A’ effort from both sides…
