Over/Under 5.5
9:30 PM ET
The Flyers visit the struggling Oilers fresh off a near perfect 3-0 at Calgary Monday night.
Edmonton continues to battle injuries as they have all year and at this point they have pretty much morphed into the Cape Breton Oilers, with a roster dotted with AHL players. They did manage to best the Carolina Hurricanes at home 4-2 in their last game Monday night, but prior to that, Edmonton has been scary crappy. Following a weird road trip in early December that saw the Oilers win five road games in a row, they have lost 20 out of their last 22 games. STOP – READ THAT AGAIN, I said 20 losses out of their last 22 games. If it was a fight theyb would have stopped it weeks ago. The wheels are off the cart in Edmonton and I can’t see any earthly way that they beat the Flyers tonight.
Philadelphia played a strong game Monday and they have vastly improved since all their goalies have gotten healthy. Ray Emery is back and playing well as evidenced by his shutout in Calgary Monday night. The Flyers are a strong offensive team averaging 3 goals per game which good enough for #6 in the NHL. They also boast the #3 power play in the league clicking at a torrid 23%. If Edmonton can’t stay out of the box (and they can’t - #12 most penalized team in the league), it will be a long night in goal for Jeff Deslauriers.
The play here is the “over’. You’ve got a strong offensive team that’s average defensively (Philly) playing a pretty weak offensive team that’s even weaker defensively. Edmonton yields 3.4 goals per game. 7 of their last 10 games have featured 6 or more total goals. Two of the remaining 4 games saw 5 goals scored. Philly should have no problem netting at least 4 in this one. If Edmonton can score 2 tonight (they average 2.54) against the average at best Philly defense, then voila…you have your over. Philly wins this one 4-2 in a sloppy affair tonight in Edmonton.
