Iona Gaels -3.5 -- O/U: 134
The Manhattan Jaspers and the Iona Gaels meet in college basketball MAAC-tion from the Hynes Athletic Center on Friday night.
The Manhattan Jaspers will try to escape a logjam in the top half of the MAAC, sitting at 7-5 in conference play after a 65-63 win over Quinnipiac to push their winning streak to three games. Pauly Paulicap is Manhattan’s lone double-digit scorer while also acting as the Jaspers’ top rebounder with 10 points and 6.5 rebounds per game while Tykei Greene is right behind with 9.9 points and 4.8 rebounds per game and Samir Stewart has 9.2 points and 4.1 assists per game. As a team, Manhattan is averaging 64.3 points per game on 39.8% shooting from the field, 31.9% from behind the arc and 62.6% from the foul line while allowing opponents to average 64 points on 39.7% shooting from the field and 35.5% from behind the arc. The Jaspers are 5-7 straight up and 6-6 ATS on the road this season.
The Iona Gaels will try to build on back-to-back wins to avoid slipping closer to the bottom of the MAAC after picking up a 75-54 win over Fairfield last time out. Iona boasts five double-digit scorers in their lineup, led by E.J. Crawford who leads the Gaels with 17.6 points per game while Tajuan Agee is averaging 13.6 points and a team-high 7.6 rebounds per game. Isaiah Washington is putting up 10.4 points and a team-high 3.4 assists per game while Isaiah Ross and Asante Gist each have 10+ points per game this season as well. As a team, Iona is averaging 68.6 points per game on 42.7% shooting from the field, 33.2% from behind the 3-point line and 74% from the foul line while allowing opponents to average 72.4 points on 43.8% shooting from the field and 38.9% from behind the 3-point line. The Gaels are 2-5 straight up and 1-5-1 against the spread at home this season.
Head-to-head, the road team is 16-7-1 ATS in the last 24 meetings between these two teams and the favorite is 9-0 ATS in the last 9 meetings.
I get the Gaels being favored because they’re at home, but the Gaels just haven’t really been playing well enough against the number to necessarily warrant a play on it. Manhattan hasn’t been anything to write home about on the road, but the Jaspers are outscoring teams by 4.4 points per game in their last 5 games and 3.2 points in conference play while Iona is being outscored by 1.5 points per game in conference and 1.4 points per game in their last 5 games. Going against Iona has come back to bit me a couple of times lately, but I just think the Jaspers can keep this one within the number. I’ll take Manhattan and the points here.
