Manchester United Transfer News: Herrera, De Rossi, Baines And Fellaini
Man Utd chase four new signings beofre the dealine on Monday.
It is now or never for David Moyes and Manchester United, as they chase four transfer deals before the window closes in three days’ time.
Moyes has spent the summer trying to seal deals for Thiago Alcantara, Cesc Fabregas, Leighton Baines and Marouane Fellaini. Thiago went elsewhere early on and Fabregas finally decided to stay at Barcelona last week, leaving Moyes with potentially just Leighton Baines and Marouane Fellaini of Everton as his remaining transfer targets.
Moyes has had two bids for Baines and Fellaini turned down by Everton, but he is expected to go back with an improved offer of around £40m for the pair this weekend, spurred on by the news that both players have asked for a transfer.
In the case of Anders Herrera it is a little more complicated, as his club, Athletic Bilbao are a traditional Basque club who only have players from that region. Players rarely leave unless they actually ask for a move, and the club is financially sound and does not need to sell any players. United has watched Herrera since he was instrumental in their defeat at the hands of Bilbao in the Europa League a couple of years ago and they have decided to make a move now.
The opening bid for the player of around £30m was turned down, mainly because there is a buyout clause in his contract of £36m, so it is certain that Moyes will go back with a bid of £36m this weekend. This will not necessarily mean that the player will move, as it will be up to him to ask to leave. However, he has previously expressed a desire to play in the Champions league and United have this to offer. Any move will need to be done quickly.
Regarding De Rossi, he has been courted over the last two years by Roberto Mancini whilst he was manager at Manchester City, however, with his departure, the interest has ended, leaving the field clear for Manchester United to try and lure the player to Old Trafford. It will not be easy, as the player has settled down at Roma this season so he will take some convincing to move. With United being in the Champions League, it may just tip the balance in their favour, but again, they will need to move quickly to seal this deal.
I expect a busy weekend at Old Trafford as the transfer window closes on Monday.
